Cold Spring School District

Measure C Renovation Project Overview

Summer 2010

Measure C is a $2.44 million General Obligation Bond passed by the District’s voters in November 2008.  The bond funds are intended to renovate the seven older school classrooms and the student restrooms.  Rooms 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 were built in the 1950s and very few improvements have been made to the rooms since.  Rooms 4 and 5 were built in 1927.  Although modifications have been made over their 80 year life span, the two rooms are in need of updating. The two student restrooms in the main building are also 80 years old.

All school construction requires approval from the Division of School Architects (DSA), and this approval process requires meeting all current accessibility laws and other codes related to school construction.  These laws have required the school district to make modifications for accessibility to all restroom facilities and the two oldest classrooms.

The renovations can be divided in to three main areas:  restroom upgrades, classroom upgrades, and a new ramp system for accessible path of travel.

Restroom upgrades -- The following is a brief summary of the six project areas that are identified on the school site plan.

Area #1 – Upper grades boys’ restroom – requires minor signage additions to meet accessibility requirements.

Area #2 – Girls’ restroom by auditorium – remove adult unisex restroom, add student handicap accessible toilet, maintain existing four toilet stalls, all new fixtures, tile, and lighting. See slide A-201

Area #3 – Add new unisex adult restroom in existing paper storage closet.   Relocate paper to office workroom and classrooms. See slide A-201

Area #4 --  Primary grades boys’ restroom – Upgrade restroom with all new fixtures, tile, and lighting.  Maintain the existing number of urinals and toilets. (See slides A-201 and “boys restroom” for floor plans)

Area #5 -- Add new handicapped accessible stall by removing the existing supply storage area and relocating the supplies to the school office. (See slides A-201 and “boys restroom” for floor plans)

Area #6 – Adult restroom and staff office between Rooms 1 and 2 – Convert existing small staff workroom and restroom to accessible student unisex restroom.  (See slide A-202 for floor plans)

Classroom renovations include new cabinets, new flooring, new wall surfaces, and new lighting.  (See slides A-201, A-202, A-203 for floor plans.  The slides  back of the classroom” and “entry from playground  for renderings of the new cabinetry for Rooms 4 and 5.

New Ramp Accessibility -- A new ramp system is planned for the playground side of Rooms 4 and 5, the primary boys’ restroom, and the auditorium.   The ramp replaces the existing small concrete steps in front of the boys’ restroom and the two classrooms, and the existing steps and ramp to the auditorium.  A detail of the new ramp can be seen on slide A-101.
