“Drawing is the discipline by which I constantly rediscover the world. I have learned that what I have not drawn, I have never really seen, and that when I start drawing an ordinary thing, I realize how extraordinary it is, sheer miracle.” ~ Frederick Franck

Art is a pure and natural form of expression and communication from the treasures of 40,000 years ago we learn of cultures, traditions and the existence of every day life. Art is a print of whom we are, where we are, and is without a doubt a subject of serious matter and importance in the world.

Joyous as it may be, the act of creating art demands enormous self-discipline that teaches students to learn how to handle frustration and failure in pursuit of their idea. It requires setting goals, selecting a strategy, determining how to apply it, and continually making assessments and revisions – in other words, thinking and solving problems. It is the human mind operating at its very best.

The sequential art program at Cold Spring is integrated into the classroom curriculum. It provides students the opportunity to have a broad range of art experiences. The classes incorporate art history, class discussion, art production, art criticism, and aesthetics. Students have the opportunity to develop their skills in a variety of art techniques including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, ceramics and interactive art.

The art classes meet with all grade levels for one hour a week. Students view art history media presentations and prints, hear lectures about artists lives and that period in art history, take part in classroom discussions, watch demonstrations of various art techniques, and create personal art. Throughout the year students practice creating individual aesthetics.

Community outreach is important to Cold Spring School. Student artwork can be viewed throughout the year at art shows and local businesses. All artwork created during the school year is displayed at our beloved Art Faire which takes place in late spring.
