Message from the Superintendent/Principal
Dr. Bryan McCabe
5/07/08
May 14 is the Day of the Teacher
Next Wednesday is designated as California’s Day of the Teacher.  The day is a great time to let your child’s
teacher know how much you appreciate her/his great work. The Student Council will make sure the teachers’
day gets off to a good start by preparing and serving our staff a special breakfast.
Board Meeting on May 12
The next regular session of the Cold Spring School Board is Monday, May 12.  The Board meets in the school
auditorium at 6:00 PM.  At the meeting the Board will discuss the preliminary 2008-09 budget, including
staffing, the play field renovation, and building repairs.
Track Meet scheduled for May 13
The Annual 3-6 Grade Track Meet is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13.   The event begins at 3:30 and ends at
6:30 PM.  The event is being held at the Westmont College track.  A letter went home this week to the parents
of all 3-6 students who are participating.  Cold Spring students and teams will compete against each other
and students from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School.
Policy and Procedure for Student Placement
Before the end of the year, the staff and I will develop tentative classes for next fall. The Cold Spring School staff
has the professional responsibility to look carefully at each child during the placement process and to make
decisions regarding placement for the following year.  We set up heterogeneous classes that are balanced in
terms of: special needs, social skills, maturity level, academic achievement, gender and any other factors which
affect group cohesiveness.  (Board Policy 6152)
Process:  In June, the current grade level teachers meet with the principal to develop tentative classes for next
fall. We discuss each child's strengths and weaknesses, make placements, and balance classes according to the
above criteria.  This is a careful, difficult, and lengthy process.
Parent Preferences:  It is not necessary for parents to express preferences as to placement.  However, parents
who wish to provide information about their children that would be helpful in making placement decisions,
may do so in writing to the Superintendent/Principal.  Please remember that it is the responsibility of the
professional staff to make the best placement for each Cold Spring student, and it is impossible to guarantee
that children will be placed as the parents requested.
Parent input for placement must be received by Friday, June 6, 2008.
Notification of Classes:  The school will send letters in late August notifying parents of their children’s
placements.  Class lists will be posted on the Friday, August 29, 2008.
