Greetings New and Returning Cold Spring School Parents!
I hope this letter finds you well! There is so much to share with you. It has been a busy summer. This Back-to-School update will summarize what we’ve been up to this summer, and all of the beginning-of-school activities you need to know for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year, including our Strategic Goals, re-entering school procedures and much more. Enjoy!
Last year, we updated our three-year strategic plan (LCAP) to include the following District Goals. Every action and service provided is designed to meet one or more of these goals.
All students will participate in a collaborative and integrated project-based approach to learning.
The Students, Parents and the Community will be actively engaged in the decision-making process.
The District will promote a positive school culture and climate that emphasizes a balance of academic achievement, healthy personal development, social and environmental responsibility, and enthusiasm for lifelong learning.
The comprehensive LCAP describes the goals, actions, services and expenditures to support positive student outcomes. The LCAP is developed consistent with state and local priorities. It can be found on the District’s website.
Health and Safety Procedures
We are continuing to make every effort to create a safe learning environment for our children and staff. In doing so, we are committed to maintaining our outdoor classrooms, small class size, frequent hand washing protocols and indoor mask wearing. Currently, all K-12 students and adults in K-12 school settings are required to wear masks indoors when students are present. People who have medical conditions that don’t allow them to wear a mask are exempt, but must wear a face shield with a drape on the bottom edge or another non restrictive alternative. We will continue to provide students with a face covering if they forget to bring one to school. The California Department of Public Health will continue assessing the plan and decide no later than Nov. 1 whether to update the mask requirements.
The state recommends all schools limit nonessential visitors, volunteers and activities involving external groups or organizations with people who are not fully vaccinated, especially in communities with moderate-to-high COVID transmission. Therefore, we ask that you limit your time on campus to essential functions and events. I strongly encourage all our students and parents who are eligible to get a COVID vaccine.
You can anticipate receiving our updated 2021-2022 safety plan outlining the safety measures in place very soon. In addition, it will also be posted on our website.
Thank you for filling out the “Independent Study” survey. We are anticipating having all of our students back on campus based upon the results we received. Thank you. Responding to the survey is essential for our planning efforts.
With our enrollment numbers stronger than ever - 194 students enrolled, we’re excited to introduce three new teachers. Sarah Schaupeter is joining us from the Santa Barbara Unified School District as our new second grade teacher. Mrs. Schaupeter comes to us with a lot of experience. She has spent the last eight years teaching second grade at Adams Elementary School. Jennifer Clark is joining us from the Carpinteria School District as our new Special Education Resource teacher/Reading Intervention teacher/Library teacher. Mrs. Clark also comes to us with a lot of experience. She has spent the last six years as the Reading Intervention teacher for the Carpinteria School District. Our very own Jill Wolf is transitioning from an instructional assistant to now serving as our PE/lunch league teacher. We all are very excited to have Jill join our teaching team.
Our primary internal communication system will continue to be served through ParentSquare. I encourage every parent to download the ParentSquare app on their device in order to receive instant text alerts.
Afterschool Care - Dolphin Center
We’re thrilled to share that Erin Goligoski will be serving as our new Dolphin Center Coordinator. Ms. Goligoski will continue to serve as an instructional assistant in the morning before she transitions as the Dolphin Center Coordinator. She will be joined by Isabel Martinez. Isabel will continue to serve as our part time office assistant in the mornings before she transitions into the Dolphin Center in the afternoons.
The Dolphin Center will begin on Tuesday, August 17th for all students. Dolphin Center opens immediately following dismissal for all grades. Dolphin Center will accommodate Kindergarten early dismissal (11:30am) between August 17-September 3. The program will run until 5:30 PM. All new families will need to re-enroll in order to participate in the Dolphin Center program. All families previously enrolled in Kinderlime (Procare) must update their information, including credit card information. Enrollment information is included in this annual student registration packet.
IMPORTANT UPCOMING EVENTS/DATES
SB Public Mobile Library - Thursday, August 5th, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
The SB Public Library Mobile Library will be returning to our campus on Thursday, August 5th from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm. I encourage all of our students to take advantage of this great opportunity to check out a few books before school begins.
NEW DATE: Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten Round Up–Friday, August 13th, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
We are looking forward to meeting our TK/Kindergarten students and parents on Friday, August 13th from 11 am – 12:00 pm at the TK/Kindergarten Round Up. During this time, all TK/Kindergarten students will get an opportunity to see the classrooms, meet the teachers, and participate in a few activities. Meanwhile, the parents will join me in the Library to get an overview of the school and learn how they can get involved with our many volunteer opportunities. Our Kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Ishikawa, are very excited to meet your child!
Class Lists Posted – Monday, August 16th, 2:30 pm
We will be posting class lists and room assignments on Monday, August 16th at 2:30 pm at the front of the school.
Popsicles on the Playground Meet and Greet – Monday, August 16th, 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm
The Parent Club is sponsoring a “Meet and Greet” on the playground from 2:30 pm -3:30 pm for all TK-6th grade students and families! Enjoy a cold popsicle and then meet your child’s/children’s teacher(s) for the new school year.
First Day of School – Tuesday, August 17th, beginning at 8:25 am
Our first day of school is August 17, 2021. We are planning to return to a normal school schedule starting promptly at 8:25 AM for all students. The playground will be supervised beginning at 8:00 AM. Release times are as follows:
Kindergarten will end the day at 2:00 PM*;
First and Second Grade will end at 2:40 PM; and,
Third through Sixth Grades will end at 3:00 PM.
Wednesday will be an early dismissal for all students to provide time for teacher professional development, collaboration and planning. The Wednesday release times are as follows:
Kindergarten will end the day at 1:45 PM;
First and Second Grade will end at 1:55 PM; and,
Third through Sixth Grades will end at 2:30 PM.
*Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students are dismissed at 11:30 am every day during the first three weeks of school. The optional Dolphin Center will begin on Tuesday, August 17th at early dismissal and will be available until 5:30 PM.
“Welcome Back” Superintendent/Principal Coffee – Tuesday, August 17th, beginning at 8:30 am
Everyone is invited to my first informal Superintendent/Principal coffee on Tuesday, August 17th at 8:30 am in the Gazebo. This is a great opportunity for you to meet new families, the Governing Board, and the presidents of the Parent Club and the Cold Spring Foundation. Coffee and pastries will be provided.
Beach Blanket Back-to-School Picnic – Thursday, August 19th, 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm
The Parent Club is hosting an all school family picnic on Thursday, August 19th from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm. It’s a “bring your own blanket and picnic dinner” event. We will also be recognizing some of our 2020-2021 outgoing families for their years of service to the district.
Back-to-School Night – Thursday, August 26th, beginning at 6 pm
All families are formally invited to attend our annual Back-to-School Night on Thursday, August 26th beginning at 6 pm on the Field. I will introduce this year’s staff and share how we all are continuing to work towards providing a robust whole child approach to teaching and learning.
My presentation will be followed by a visit to your child’s/children’s classroom(s) where every teacher will be presenting his/her year long plans and goals for your child. This is an adult only event. Please bring your own beach blanket or chair.
We are looking forward to working together as an “All Star” team to make the 2021-2022 school year the very best it can be!
