FREE Breakfast and Lunch Program Exciting Update

During Monday night’s Board Meeting, the Board unanimously approved a contract with NuCuisine to plan, prepare and serve breakfast and lunch to our students.  The State of California has recently mandated that all K-8 students in California be offered breakfast and lunch, free of charge.   NuCuisine Catering, owned by chef Koji Nomura, has been providing school lunch programs in Santa Barbara for 13 years. They currently serve lunch and breakfast at Riviera Ridge (formerly Marymount) and Montecito Union School District.  They have also provided lunches for Bishop Diego High School and Hope School. Mr. Nomura has owned and operated Santa Barbara restaurants including Piranha Sushi Bar, Rocks Restaurant, California Noodle Kitchen, Miso Hungry, Santa Barbara Tennis Club, and served as the Executive Chef at Oku Restaurant.

NuCuisine will begin services on Monday, October 24th.  I am overjoyed to know we will be serving our children fresh, healthy, and enjoyable meals.  On Monday, our Board President, Michael Marino, recruited a few students from the Dolphin Afterschool program to be our official taste testers.  All the students gave chef Koji a thumbs up and came back for seconds; kid approved!

We are also extremely grateful for the generous donation of a six-burner stove/oven and a stacked convection oven for our new commercial kitchen.  The generous donation comes from the San Ysidro Ranch and was coordinated by parent Ian Williams, executive chef of the San Ysidro Ranch.  This donation will permit NuCuisine to prepare fresh, healthy meals in our own kitchen beginning January 2023.

Now that we have officially established our meal program for the remainder of the year, I am kindly requesting ALL families complete the new meals form for October 24 - November 30.  The new meals form is designed to help us plan for the number of meals we will be serving each day.  I will be sending out the menu for your review as soon as I receive it from chef Koji.  Thank you for your support as we strive to deliver the best in your child’s educational experience!

Meals Request Form for October 24th - November 30 - ALL Families Must Complete the Meals Form, one per student

Board Meeting Highlights from the October 10, 2022 Meeting

  • The Board reviewed three Board Policies and Administrative Regulations for the first reading: BP & AR 1330 Use of School Facilities, BP & AR Independent Study, and BP & AR Vacation. They will be on the November Board Agenda for a second reading and approval.

  • The Board reviewed and approved the Conflict of Interest Code. The proposed revisions were minor in nature.

  • The Board tasted some of the food provided by Koji Nomura from NuCuisine. Following the tasting, the Board approved a contract with NuCuisine for the remainder of the school year.  NuCuisine will be providing breakfast and lunch for the universal meals program.

  • The Board approved an amendment to the 19Six Architectural Contract for the new classroom buildings.  Mr. Calderon explained the revisions to the building designed to reduce the overall cost of the project and deliver a state-of-the-art STEAM and Art building.

  • Mr. Calderon gave an update on the progress of the construction of our new commercial kitchen.  This week, the contractor is installing the plumbing for the various sinks, and dishwasher.  The district has finalized the design for the hood equipment and has submitted the design to the Department of the State Architect (DSA).  The hood equipment is designed to prevent and suppress any potential fire in the kitchen.  We expect approval of the design in early November.  In the interim, the District will install new electrical, complete all construction and purchase the remaining equipment.

  • The Board authorized the Board President to make monthly reports to the Montecito Journal to inform the community about events and activities at the school.

  • The Board adopted the Superintendent Goals for the 2022-2023 academic year.
