Do you want to be a Substitute Teacher?

Because of the state teacher shortage, the application to obtain an Emergency Credential to Substitute Teach just got easier! As of January 1, 2023, a temporary waiver of the Basic Skills Requirement to apply for the credential is now available.  You no longer need to take the CBEST.  The only educational requirement is a BA or BS degree. If you are interested in becoming a substitute teacher, please give Coral Godlis a call in the office. Substitute teaching is a great way to work with all grade levels and get to know our wonderful students.

Sixth-Grade STEAM Mural

Please check out the beautiful sixth-grade mural the students designed and created in STEAM class.  It’s displayed in the upper-grade courtyard.  The information below went out to all sixth-grade parents; it’s from Dr. Gradias and highlights the “why, how and what” behind the mural.

“After almost 4 months of research, movie production, digital design, and building, this class has finally installed their sixth-grade mural and it looks STUNNING!  Each panel represents an activist who inspired your kids. This project is so moving because it is a genuine reflection of what really matters to young people - they care deeply about racial justice, climate action, LGBTQ representation, school safety, species conservation, and clean water.  They believe in supporting girls' education, listening to indigenous voices, and ending world hunger.  And while there is a beautiful diversity in the people represented on this wall, there is one remarkable and poignant commonality - every one of these individuals is a young person who began their work as a teenager (or younger!).

A project like this doesn't come together without a tremendous amount of support from a multitude of places.  The classroom teachers supported the kids in their research writing, while Mrs. O'Neill guided the class through painting a fragmented value scale on wood panels.  And - in an extremely lovely moment of life coming full circle - Mattie Shelton, a student from my first sixth-grade class at Cold Spring School almost 20 years ago, brought her tools and modified our rails to accommodate all our panels.  So fun when your students come back and save the day!

Please find a moment to come by room 7, and enjoy the incredible art piece that your kids have created.  We are inspired and renewed with hope when we look at the good work that is being done by others.  Perhaps, one of our kids will be on someone else's wall someday.”
