2023 California Exemplary Arts Education School

The Cold Spring School has been recognized as a California Exemplary Arts Education School for 2023.  The school is one of 19 schools Statewide that have received this distinction.  The award recognizes an exemplary commitment to arts education, including high-quality arts curriculum and instruction and assessment, high-quality professional learning for staff, and access to high-quality, culturally responsive arts instruction for all students.  The  award recognizes the Cold Spring teachers’ commitment to teaching, loving and supporting the whole child.  It also recognizes the community's commitment to our Arts Education program (specialist program).  The receipt of both this award and the 2023 California Distinguished Schools Award, is a testament to everyone's hard work.  Congratulations!!


Spelling Bee Sweet Sixteen!

Round 1 of the Spelling Bee left us with the top sixteen spellers!  The “Sweet Sixteen” will move on to Round 2 on Monday, February 13th.  Round 2 will leave us with the top two Spelling Champions that will move on to compete at the Santa Barbara County Spelling Bee.

District Calendar for 2023-24 School Year

Attached is the proposed Cold Spring School District Calendar for the 2023-24 school year. The Board will approve the calendar at the February 13, 2023, Board meeting. If you have any input or questions regarding the calendar, please contact Coral Godlis at cgodlis@coldspringschool.net


Calling all Singers, Dancers, Musicians, Magicians, and more! We want YOU to be a part of our Annual Showcase of Stars! 

Students are encouraged to organize a fun "LIVE" act, up to 2 minutes in length, either with friends or on their own. Performers are limited to one act. Be creative- acts can be a comedy routine, a spoken word, hula-hooping or even a martial art!  

SHOWTIME: Wednesday February 22 at 4pm! 

DRESS REHEARSAL: Tuesday February 21 3-5pm 

HOW DO I SIGN UP? Sign-Up Sheet

Please fill out this Sign-Up Sheet–this is the preferred method. There will also be a sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board outside the office from January 25-February 2. The deadline to sign up is February  2nd. Please help your child be prepared to sign-up with their name, grade and description of the act if they use the sheet at school. 

AUDITION DATE INFO! 

Auditions will be held after-school on Monday February 6th in the auditorium. TK-3rd grade auditions will begin at 3:15 PM, and 4-6th grade will begin at 4 PM. The audition schedule will be posted on the bulletin board outside the office.  Emails will be sent to the parents listed in the CSS directory.  

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO AUDITION? Please bring the instruments, costumes or props that you will need to show off your talent.  This includes borrowed instruments from Ms. DiSalvo.  Please contact her prior to your audition to borrow any instruments.  Due to restricted space you cannot store props at school.  You will need to bring props back and forth from home.

President’s Day Holiday, February 17 and February 20, No School!

President’s Day weekend is February 17 - 20. There will be no school for students on Friday, February 17, or Monday, February 20.  The school office will also be closed. Enjoy the long weekend! 


Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten Enrollment, 2023-24 School Year

Incoming TK/Kindergarten Enrollment is happening now! Please contact the office to start the enrollment process so we can begin planning for the 2023-2024 school year. The Transitional Kindergarten window has been extended. If your child's 5th birthday falls between September 2nd and April 2nd, they qualify for Transitional Kindergarten.  If you know anyone who is interested in taking a school tour, please encourage them to make an appointment with the school office for one of the below-listed tour dates:

Hiding in Plain Sight , January 31 and February 1, 6:30 PM

UCSB Arts & Lectures is pleased to invite students, families, and education professionals from your district to a two-part documentary film series from Director Ken Burns on the youth mental health crisis on Tuesday, January 31 and Wednesday, February 1 at 6:30 PM at UCSB Campbell Hall.

About the Film: From executive producer Ken Burns, Hiding in Plain Sight is a documentary about the mental health crisis among youth in America. Follow the journeys of more than 20 young Americans from all over the country and all walks of life who have struggled with thoughts and feelings that have troubled – and, at times – overwhelmed them. Hiding in Plain Sight presents an unstinting look at both the seemingly insurmountable obstacles faced by those who live with mental disorders and the hope that many have found after that storm. 


Board Highlights from the January 18th, 2023 Board Meeting

  • Dr. Alzina thanked the Board, Staff, and Teachers for their support and quick response during the rainstorm and evacuation.

  • Dr. Alzina presented the Star reading and math results. 92% of 2nd through 6th grade students meet or exceed the standards in reading and 91% of 2nd through 6th grade students meet or exceed the standards in math. 100% of students in 2nd grade are at or above grade level. 

  • Dr. Alzina presented the LCAP Survey results. There were 138 participants. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive in all three of the LCAP Goals. 

  • Dr. Alzina presented the CA Dashboard for Cold Spring School. Cold Spring School is being recognized as a CA Distinguished School based on the Dashboard results. 

  • The Board reviewed the 2023-23 School Year District Calendar. They will approve the calendar in February.

  • The Board approved the J-13A Report to allow for a missed school day on January 10, 2023 due to the emergency storm conditions, evacuation, and school closure. 

  • The Board approved the new classroom building project change order for structural changes to the building to decrease the cost of the project and maintain the look and functionality of the classrooms.
