A Special shout out to Brett Grube and Mark Gonzales for organizing our annual all-school Valentine's Day Pancake Breakfast and to Gavin Roy Productions for the fun dance party!  We all felt the love!


Storm Update

There are two storm systems forecasted for this week going into next week. The OEM is working closely with the National Weather Service and Public Safety Partners, monitoring these systems and discussing any potential impacts that could result. There are currently no public actions in place for these storms. Below are the upcoming storm predictions. 

Storm 1: February 14-February 15, 2024

  • A light rain will come through Wednesday night into Thursday.

  • 0.00-0.25” for the first storm. 

Storm 2: February 17-20, 2024

  • At this time there is a 50% chance of this system bringing 2-5+” countywide and 5-8+” in the mountains and foothills.

  • Current models indicate this system will be many hours of steady rain over Santa Barbara County with peak rains Sunday night (2/18) to Monday night (2/19).

  • Heavier rainfall amounts are forecasted to be over the southern region of Santa Barbara County.     

  • There is currently a 10% chance of thunderstorms.

  • Peak rainfall rates of 0.5-1.0” per hour.

  • Winds of 40+ MPH are expected Monday (2/19).

  • The NWS indicated an increasing risk of significant flooding & mudslides for areas that are still wet from the previous storms we have had.

  • High tides of 5.5-6.0 feet expected on Tuesday (2/20).

  • There is significant flooding possible for southwest facing shores.

  • NWS indicated that these conditions are similar to those we saw in mid-December in 2023.


Upper Grade Rap Residency with Agent 23 Skidoo
Upper Grade Rap Residency with Agent 23 Skidoo will be happening Monday, February 26th through Friday March 1st.  He's a grammy-winning, family-friendly kids hip-hop/rap artist.  Families are invited to observe our last class on Friday March 1st. Thank you to our amazing parent club for making these music enrichment events possible for our students!   Link

President’s Day Holiday, February 16 and February 19, No School!
President’s Day weekend is February 16 - 19. There will be no school for students on Friday, February 16, or Monday, February 19.  The school office will also be closed. Enjoy the long weekend! 


Board Meeting Highlights for the February 12, 2024 Board Meeting

  • Dr. Alzina recognized Kelly Orwig for organizing the Cold Spring School Spelling Bee. 

  • Dr. Alzina thanked the parent volunteers for organizing the annual school Variety Show!

  • Dr. Alzina recognized Sara DiSalvo for her leadership with the Kodály Workshop. There were 20 teacher attendees from all over Santa Barbara county. 

  • Dr. Alzina reported to the Board all the upcoming events: CSS Valentine’s Day Breakfast, Student Council Candy Grams,  and Presidents Day weekend.  

  • Dr. Alzina presented the LCAP Mid Year Update to the Board. 

  • Dr. Alzina presented a California Dashboard 2024 update including the local indicators. Chronic absenteeism continues to affect students' academic performance. 

  • Mr. Calderon gave a preliminary report of the Second Interim for the period ending January 31, 2024. He updated the Board regarding the new classroom building project. It is on track to be finished for the start of the next school year. Mr. Calderon has worked diligently to keep the cost of the building and change orders to a minimum. 

  • The Board approved the J-13 A Report to allow for the school closure on February 5, 2024 due to the emergency conditions. 

  • The Board approved the contract for outdoor classrooms with Common Ground Landscaping for the new building project. 

  • The Board approved the cancellation of the March 11, 2024 Regular Board meeting and rescheduled the meeting for March 14, 2024.
